Biblical Teaching about Excellence in All

1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Does God see man as man sees man?

How does man see man?

How does God see man?

Proverbs 10:4

Lazy hands make for poverty,
    but diligent hands bring wealth.

What happens to a lazy worker?

What happens to the hard worker?

1 Corinthians 10:31

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

If you  _____  or  _________   or whatever you do, do  _________       for  _______________ God.

Colossians 3:17

17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

According to this verse, all our words and actions should be done in the name of whom?

To whom do we give thanks?

Colossians 3:22-24

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Does verse 22 imply we should NOT please the boss? Support your answer..

How should I work (verses 22-23)?

Who am I really working for, according to verse 24?

1 Peter 4:10

10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms

How are we to use our gifts?

Summary Statements

Man looks on the outward appearance, BUT God looks at a man’s heart (1 Samuel 16:7b).

It is our responsibility to be diligent and skillful in our work (Proverbs 10:4,5).

Whatever we do, in word or deed, we should do all for God’s glory (1st Corinthians 10:31 and Colossians 3:17).

Principles That Work

Excellence in All means our standard of performance must transcend that of our co-workers and our superiors and be rooted and grounded in personal excellence.

God will hold you accountable for how you use the resources He has given you.

People do put a lot of stock in the outward appearance, so we should be mindful of the way we look, dress, and carry ourselves (discretion, modesty, cleanliness, etc.).

Practical Actions

List three things you could change to improve your work or ministry performance to achieve Excellence in All.

What things can you do as a volunteer, employee or worker to demonstrate excellence and dedication at your workplace, church or ministry?

What have you learned taking these actions that has meant the most to you?

If you are finishing this Training, what goals have you set for your personal life and work or ministry?

The Call to Mentor

“Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”

Read Genesis 4: 1-9 Why did God raise this question?  Why did Cain respond the way he did?

Matthew 22:34-40 How important is your neighbor?

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Name a few things love is and a few things love does

Psalms 1 What kind of person makes a “bad” mentor(counselor)?

Psalms 16:7 Who is our ultimate counselor?

Hindrances to Helping
What are some common excuses we use for not being our brother’s keeper?

Read Luke 9:57-62 How did Jesus handle excuses?

What can you do to help face the challenge of mentoring someone else?

My Mission in Life

Suggestion: Adapted from What Color is Your Parachute?, summarized below.

The job or ministry hunt can be an opportunity to make fundamental changes to take my life in a new direction.

The search for a dream job is a search for greater happiness. We want to be happy in our work, in our life and in our soul. We need some sense of mission for our life.

Webster defines Mission as “a continuing task or responsibility that one is destined or fitted to do or specially called upon to undertake.”

Mission means the same thing as a Calling or a Vocation. That means someone must do the calling. We have a chance to rethink what we want to accomplish in our life. This takes time.

Exercise 12.3 – My Mission in Life

In other actions, your life purpose and mission were introduced as a foundational element for your goals and career plans.  It was also stated that not everyone has a clear understanding of their life purpose and mission, and by participating in this ministry, you may define, refine or reshape it.  Your opportunity, after taking other actions, is to write your mission in life as you see it today, after all you have learned about Biblical Values, Career Skills and yourself.

Note the following (adapted from Parachute):
