Public Speaking

Public Speaking can be one of your most valuable skills. Most people like public speaking about as much as they like snakes. But you can learn and enjoy it. These tips will help you. And you can practice. If you’re seeking employment, it helps to have a Two-minute Speech, sometimes called the Elevator Speech.

Elevator Speech

Elevator Speech

  • You Present your Calling or your Career Goal
  • Your Job or Volunteer Objective
  • Your Skills and the Steps You’re Taking.

It’s a short, stand-up, friendly, two-minute presentation that could go like this:

  • Hello, my name is …
  • The field I have as an objective is …
  • The occupation I would like to have is …
  • Some of the skills I have for this type of work are …
  • The steps I’m taking are ..

After practicing this, you’ll enjoy getting on your feet, controlling your butterflies and giving a short presentation. The key is to practice, practice, practice.

Pay attention to the time limit. For a two-minute presentation, aim for no less than one minute and no longer than 3 minutes. Each 100 words takes about one minute.

  • Take a deep breath and relax.
  • Start by giving your name.
  • Limit your use of filler words such as “Ah”, “Um”, and “So”.
  • Keep your head up and look around as you speak.
  • Try to make eye contact for at least one phrase or sentence with as many people as possible in different parts of the room.
  • When presenting with a screen, try to keep facing the audience.
  • Draw your audience in by changing your tone and facial expressions.
  • Use your body language to help you, not hurt you.
  • Do not overuse your hands or keep them at your sides the entire time.
